[ Jim's note:
In case you don't know, Linux is a cool operating system,
superior in most ways to Microsoft Windows. This page
is a bit technical, and if you are a bit of a technophobe,
don't worry, have a quick read anyway. Its good for
the soul :-))

Madpole:
I am FINALLY getting around this Linux thing...
I stepped down one step and got myself Red Hat
[ a Linux distribution]... not as easy
as Mandrake [ another Linux distribution]
but that was the whole point... I am slowly
ironing all the problems out and am amazed how
much control and freedom one can have... that
was the whole point of getting Red Hat .. learn
it hard way...it is not too bad... just silly
things like US [as opposed to UK] keyboard,
changing monitor display and stuff.
eadon:
Exactly! M$ Windows is
utterly bad because you are not in control!
The Windows registry means you can't copy programs
from one machine to another over a network.
This is why people are not buying new Windows
machines, it's too much hassle to reinstall
everything.
As you say, Linux can
sometimes be difficult to get working. Shame.
Linux should kill windows easily.
Madpole:
No man!
No no no no!
I did not say that!
What I said is that Madrake is TOO EASY.. it
is PLUG AND PLAY.... What I said is that I actually
stepped down from Mandrake and got Red Hat which
is NOT so easy so I can learn something hehehe!
All Linux/Unix graphical interfaces are just
interfaces to command line commands and files...
who needs them anyway? hehe.. I am learning
to work more and more with just Xterminal...
it is 100 times faster than any graphical interface
and obviously one can do 100 times more things
since it is not "customised" for general user..hehe......
Anyway... This has been said million of times
before hehe.....I was actually thinking about
it a bit.... yes.. Linux/Unix will always be
" complicated" system because You just get raw
components which You can organize in the way
You like... it is like buying a puzzle in pieces
instead of finished puzzle... If You wanna system
when You just insert CD and "everything" will
work then just stick to Windows which IS much
better at this than Linux.... but don't complain
if You don't like something.. hehe.. Windows
is predefined product..blah blah blah...
All this comes from our recent discussion about
games... a good game requires huge time investment
to learn all. Quarks...again... Linux is adventure
game with a lot of dark, unexplored corners...
Windows is just "Shoot them ..." easy to play
game one gets bored with very quickly.... Anyway..
This is not what I wanted to say hehe, I never
found a game which I would "like" so I decided
to treat the Linux as a game.. And all the time
invested might bring potential financial rewards
as well... hehe... so I am playing, playing....
